A Day in the Life of a Middle School Student Coder: Weekend Edition
Welcome to a day in my life as a middle school student coder! While weekdays are packed with school and assignments, weekends give me the perfect chance to dive deep into my passion for coding while balancing my extracurriculars, school work, and family time. Here’s how I juggle it all on a typical weekend day:
8:00 AM – A Slow Start: Breakfast and Family Time
I like to start my weekends a bit slower, waking up at around 8:00 AM. After a nice breakfast with my family, I spend a little time catching up with them and talking about the plans for the day. It’s important to me to stay connected with my family, and mornings are a great time for that.
9:00 AM – School Work: Getting Things Done Early
Before diving into my coding projects, I make sure to finish any schoolwork I have. Whether it’s math homework or preparing for an upcoming test, I find that getting my schoolwork out of the way early helps me stay focused for the rest of the day. I usually spend about an hour on this.
10:00 AM – Coding Time: Dive into My Projects
Now comes the fun part—coding time! Since I’m working on several projects at any given time, weekends give me the opportunity to dedicate a solid chunk of my day to them.
- Today’s project: I’m currently working on my Scratch game where the user solves math problems to progress through different levels. This helps me combine my love for coding and my school subjects (math in this case!).
I usually spend 2–3 hours in the morning coding, debugging, and testing my projects. I’ll sometimes take short breaks to stretch, but when I’m really into a project, time flies!
1:00 PM – Lunchtime and Chill
After an intense morning of coding, it’s time to take a break and recharge. Lunchtime with my family is always a good opportunity to disconnect from the screen for a while and relax. We often chat about what everyone’s been up to or plan an afternoon activity.
2:00 PM – Extracurriculars: Piano Practice and Reading
I believe that a balanced life means nurturing all your interests. After lunch, I dedicate an hour or so to piano practice. Music is a great way to unwind and get creative in a completely different way from coding. I’m currently practicing a new song for an upcoming recital.
- Tip: Even if you’re passionate about coding or any other activity, it’s important to explore other hobbies too. It keeps things fresh!
3:00 PM – Coding Challenge Time: Pushing My Skills
In the afternoon, I like to test myself with coding challenges. These aren’t always tied to a project—sometimes, I’ll explore new programming languages or try out new ideas that come to mind.
Today, I’m working on a challenge where I create an app using Thunkable to track daily water consumption. It’s a simple project, but it’s helping me practice my app development skills while learning to work with new features.
5:00 PM – Outdoor Break: Family Walk
After another coding session, it’s time to get some fresh air. My family and I usually go for a walk in the nearby park to stretch our legs and enjoy the outdoors. This break helps me clear my mind and refresh before the evening.
6:00 PM – Fun Time: Movies or Games with Family
Evenings are reserved for fun, whether it’s watching a movie with my family or playing board games. It’s a great way to wind down and have some fun after a productive day.
8:00 PM – Evening Coding Session: Wrapping Up
If I’m feeling particularly inspired, I’ll squeeze in another hour of coding after dinner. This is usually when I wrap up whatever I was working on earlier in the day or plan out what I want to do next. It’s also a great time to review the progress I’ve made and troubleshoot any lingering issues.
9:30 PM – Wind Down with a Book
To end my day, I spend some time reading. It could be a novel or a book related to coding and tech, but it helps me relax before bed. After a full day of activities, it’s nice to take a quiet moment to reflect and get ready for the next day.
10:30 PM – Bedtime and Planning for Tomorrow
Before bed, I quickly review my plans for the next day and jot down any new ideas that came up during the day. Then it’s lights out, ready to recharge for another exciting day.
Final Thoughts
Balancing coding with school, extracurriculars, and family time can be a challenge, but it’s all about finding what works for you. Coding is a huge part of my life, but so are my hobbies, schoolwork, and time spent with family. I love how weekends give me the flexibility to immerse myself in coding projects while still enjoying the other things I’m passionate about.
That’s a typical weekend day in the life of a middle school student coder! Whether you’re just starting or have been coding for a while, I hope this glimpse into my routine helps you find the right balance in your own schedule.
