Winning My First Hackathon: From Doubt to Triumph

I remember it vividly. The announcement for the solo hackathon flashed on my screen, and my heart sank a little. It wasn’t the challenge that made me hesitate—it was the blank canvas in my mind. I was out of ideas.

This wasn’t like any group project where you could bounce ideas off teammates. No, this was a solo hackathon, and I had no inspiration. The clock was ticking, and participants were already diving into their ideas. I sat there, staring at my laptop, feeling like I had nothing to offer. But deep down, something in me said, “Just try.”

The Aha! Moment: A Thunkable App Idea Appears

As the deadline loomed closer, I realized I didn’t need to build something revolutionary. I just needed to build something meaningful. That’s when the idea struck me—the environment. Something that matters, something that’s important to everyone, but from a perspective that I could connect with: endangered animals.

Suddenly, I was filled with energy and excitement. I turned to Thunkable, an app-building platform I had dabbled in before, and got to work. I decided to create an app that would raise awareness about endangered animals—a topic close to my heart.

Building the App: ‘About Endangered Animals’

I quickly brainstormed a structure for the app. It had to be simple but effective, and most importantly, it had to work. With every passing minute, I felt the pressure mounting, but I pushed through.

  • Main Feature: The app featured a swipe function—users could swipe from left to right on the main page to explore various types of endangered animals.
  • Interactive Design: Once users selected a category, they could click on an image, and the text would increase in font size, making it easier to read.
  • Navigation: At the bottom of each page, I added a back button that would return users to the main page, ensuring smooth navigation.
  • Educational Purpose: The goal was simple: to give people easy access to information about endangered species and to inspire them to take action.

Every moment was a rush as I built the sections, created the buttons, and uploaded images. With each new function, my excitement grew—but so did my anxiety. Would this even work?

The Submission: Anxiety and Doubt

When I hit the submit button, I was astonished that I had even finished it. It was far from perfect, and my doubts began to creep in again. Was it good enough? Was it too simple? Did I miss something?

It wasn’t a flashy app, and I worried that other submissions would far outshine mine. But I also felt a small sense of pride—I had pushed through my hesitation and created something that I believed in. Still, the lingering doubts about my chances of winning hung over me.

The Unexpected Victory

Then came the moment I’ll never forget. The hackathon results were announced, and as they started reading the winners, I braced myself for disappointment. When they called my name, I froze. Wait, did I win?

I had done it. I won the hackathon with my simple, yet meaningful app, "About Endangered Animals." It felt surreal. I had gone from having no idea at all to creating something that resonated enough to win a competition. The judges were impressed by the app’s clarity, usability, and the message it conveyed. The environmental focus struck a chord, and I was thrilled that my small contribution had made such an impact.

Takeaways: Believe in Your Ideas

Looking back, I realize this experience wasn’t just about winning. It was about trusting the process. Even when I felt uninspired and doubted my abilities, I pushed forward. This hackathon taught me that you don’t need to have the flashiest or most complex idea to succeed. Sometimes, the simplest ideas—if they come from a place of passion—are the most powerful.

About the App: ‘About Endangered Animals’

For those curious about the app I created, "About Endangered Animals" is an educational tool designed to raise awareness about the species that are at risk of extinction. Here’s how it works:

  • Swipe Feature: Users can swipe from left to right on the main page to explore various categories of endangered animals.
  • Learn More: Clicking on any image opens up more detailed information about the species, and the text automatically increases in size for easier reading.
  • Simple Navigation: A back button on each page ensures smooth navigation, leading users back to the main menu without confusion.

The app serves as a learning tool for people of all ages who want to understand the importance of wildlife conservation. By educating people on endangered species, we can collectively contribute to preserving our planet’s biodiversity.

Final Thoughts

If there’s anything I’ve learned from my first hackathon, it’s this: don’t underestimate your ideas. Even if you start with nothing, keep pushing. Take that first step, and the ideas will follow. Who knows? You might just surprise yourself like I did.

Thanks for reading, and remember—believe in your work, no matter how small or simple it may seem. You never know where it might lead.
